4Series – the first recording session – August 2001

For the next installment of the 4Series music archive I dig out for you the very first ‘proper’ recording session that was undertaken in a studio.  The venue was Sam Sharpe Music Project in Wolverhampton, England and the engineer was Spock.

The recording was supposed to be to document the sessions that 4 Minute Warning had undertaken at the project previously in the year.  However, Bulter and Joe for some reason didn’t want to follow through with the project and they parted company with the band a short time before the recording session.  In order to go through with the recording as we intended, I gave our old friend Wayne Riley a call to see whether he would be interested in playing on some tracks.  The emphasis of the session was that it would simply be a session recorded down on to multitrack and then mixed.  I think we had one practice in the week preceeding the session to go over some ideas and then we went for it.   This, I am sure you will agree is very much in keeping with the way we still run things!!! [that is probably not good however]

We recorded about four tunes on the day I think.  To this day they still remain without names so they are stated here as they are listed on my machine: –

BRAVE DESIRE (PH03)
BRAVE DESIRE – take 2
BRAVE DUB
BRAVE CHAT – Dread Lester
POWERLESS ADVENTURE
SHADOW (the reality of truth)
ONE DROP

Mixing took place on two dates after the session in late August 2001 (I still have the exact dates somewhere which I will dig out)  and duties were undertaken by myself and Paul Manasseh, assisted by Spock and Lester.  The mixes that came out are heavily dubbed and awash with echo, and due to the nature of the source material – in particular the drums – they aren’t too hot.  The mixing sessions also yielded one dj cut by Lester to the first band take of the PH03 rhythm (the original version had been cut on Minidisc to the Olde Scottish drum track about a year or two earlier).

Back in 2004 I took the master tapes back in to Sam Sharpe and did some fresh mixes of the material.  The result isn’t really that different, apart from yielding a couple more Dread Lester dj versions to the tunes and the more interesting ones are included here.

One month later we went back in to the studio minus Wayne to record some of our strongest material to date, and this will be the next installment on these pages.
